![]() Cases generally lacked follow-up, and it was dif-ficult to determine compliance with court-ordered psychological evaluations and counseling. The results showed a disparity between the ways different jurisdictions handled hoarding cases, as well as a lack of commu-nication between agencies. This study obtained information about the hoarder, animals, charges, prosecution, sentencing, and recidivism for fifty-six cases identified through media reports. This lack of information has hampered effective resolution and the prevention of recidivism. Conclui-se que devido à carência estudos empíricos sobre a temática, pesquisas necessitam ser realizadas para sanar essa lacuna e, consequentemente, construir estratégias de intervenções.Īnimal hoarding is a form of abuse that affects thousands of animals each year, yet little is known about how cases are best resolved, the effectiveness of prosecution, and how sentences relate to the severity of the offense. I explore new approaches that coordinate a variety of community resources in response to hoarding cases that offer the best opportunity to respond to both the human and animal problems associated with animal hoarding. Attempts to solve these problems by enacting new laws specifically addressing animal hoarding have been controversial and ineffective. I document how prosecution of such cases can be difficult and often does not adequately consider the mental health issues underlying the problem or the high likelihood of recidivism. Conventional animal cruelty laws have often been inadequate to respond to animal hoarding cases until they reach levels that may involve serious harm to animals and people. I review the different forms that animal hoarding can take and the current understanding of the prevalence, demographics and possible etiology of this disorder. However, it has only been recognized as an indication of a mental disorder in the last decade. Due to the limited number of manuscripts on this topic, more research is needed to develop effective intervention strategies, which should include not only psychiatric and neurologic care, but also veterinary care and familiarity with public health policies.Īnimal hoarding has been considered a significant problem by animal welfare and law enforcement professionals for over a century. We discuss psychopathological mechanisms, such as ageism and attachment disorders. Neurological and psychiatric conditions, such as dementia, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), psychoses, and drug addiction were some of the most common underlying causes. The main findings show that persons hoarding animals in squalor tend to be of advanced age and socially isolated, lacking perception of the consequences of their behavior on themselves, their families, and their animals. From the 52 scientific articles identified in our search, we included and analyzed 23 manuscripts. The main objective of this preliminary review was to identify studies that investigated extreme forms of animal hoarding in an effort to define the concept of Noah syndrome, recently proposed as the animal variant of Diogenes syndrome. ![]()
